Food Trends From FNCE: New Snack Bars

Every year, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics – the organization responsible for 100,000 credentialed food and nutrition experts, including Registered Dietitians – holds its annual conference.  FNCE (the Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo) took place this month in Boston, MA and hosted hundreds of exhibitors.  I was on a quest as I entered the behemoth expo floor; to find snack bars that were nutrient-dense and appropriate for those with food allergies and sensitivities. Sometimes, when honoring your hunger cues, you need to eat, but may not have the opportunity to sit down for a meal or a snack.  Snack bars fill the need to eat on the run, but some of my clients it’s difficult to find snack bars that are safe to eat.  In particular, I was looking for snack bars that would suit my clients with digestive disorders like Celiac (and others following a gluten-free diet) and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (and following the FODMAP diet).  I was delighted with the array of snack bars I found!  Here is a list of my favorites (in no particular order):

Zing Bars

These bars are delicious!  Created by Registered Dietitians, Zing bars are gluten-free and vegan.  They have 12 flavors, ranging from chocolate coated, cookie-filled, and fruit and nut varieties.  All bars contain protein, fiber, and monounsaturated fats.  Admittedly, I fan-girled all over this booth.  I shared (some of) the samples with my family and even my picky eater loved them.  My favorite flavor was Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter.  I don’t have a photo of that one because the samples didn’t last long!  See all of the scrumptious flavors on their website.

Mediterra

This is a new twist on the snack bar – the savory bar!  When looking for an on-the-go snack, not everyone has a sweet tooth.  Enter the Mediterra bars.  Based on the guidelines of the Meditteranean diet, these bars contain a combination of vegetables, grains, and seeds that pack a delicious and nutritious punch.  Flavors included Bell Pepper and Green Olives, Sundried Tomato and Basil, and my favorite, Kale and Pumpkin Seeds.  Mediterra bars also come in sweet varieties. Although they are not certified gluten-free, they do not contain wheat, so they are safe for those that are gluten-sensitive (not suitable for those with Celiac). Check out all of their products on their website.

88 Acres

If you follow the Low FODMAP diet to treat Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) or Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) there is a bar on the market for you!  88 Acres makes a snack bar that is free from the fermentable carbohydrates that cause digestive discomfort for those with IBS and SIBO, and it’s made with chocolate and sea salt!  88 Acres bars are also a safe choice for people who suffer from the top eight allergens (wheat, dairy, shellfish, nuts, tree nuts, soy, fish, and eggs).  They are also certified gluten-free and vegan.  Although they are free from many things, these bars are full of flavor and nutrients like fiber, protein, and carbohydrates.  88 Acres offers three flavors – Apple and Ginger, Triple Berry, and Chocolate and Sea Salt (this is the only Low FODMAP flavor) – all available on their website.

FODY Low FODMAP Food Co.

At the time of FNCE, the FODY Nicer Bars were not available for tasting, but I thought them worthy of a mention because there are so few Low FODMAP snack bars on the market.  When they come to market, the Nicer Bars will come in Peanut Butter and Chocolate Chip. This company has also launched a line of low FODMAP foods including tomato-based pasta sauces, salsa, and barbecue sauce.  All products are available for pre-order on their website.
